Brookhaven Country Club in Brookhaven,
Mississippi is one of the oldest private clubs in the Magnolia State. While working
as the Senior Design Associate for Maxwell Golf Group, Mr. Crace handled
the routing of the new nine holes as well as the re-design of the
fairways, tees, bunkers, and new green complexes on all 18 holes of the club, located 45 minutes south of
Jackson. Originally just nine holes, the two year project included building ten new
holes on newly-acquired property adjacent to the existing club in the first year, then
converting the existing nine holes into eight new holes and home sites in the second year.
The finished product--with its unique combination of a par 70 with four par-5's and
six par-3's--makes this one of the more interesting and fun-to-play courses in Mississippi
(not to mention it's the home of what may be the only double green in the state).
"Routing
the course at Brookhaven was a particularly rewarding challenge," says
Crace. "We had a large open area and a large wooded area and I did
not want the new part of the course to feel like two distinctly
different courses. Maintaining the flow of the course was vitally
important. Add to that the fact that we didn't have room to
stretch out a par 72 and we did not want a short par 72, so I opted for
a routing with six par 3 holes so that we could keep four par 5 holes."
The result
is the feel of a links-style course in the open areas on the new land combined with
the stately trees from the existing course make for a lasting impression on each hole with
pot bunkers and native grasses throughout. The holes weave
together beautifully and the course receives rave reviews from golfers
who play it for the first time each year. |
