Project Spotlight
The Refuge
Location: Flowood, MS
Scope: Full Course Renovation
In 2017, construction began on the total renovation of The Refuge — an upscale daily fee course owned by the City of Flowood (a suburb of the capital city of Jackson). A developer from New Orleans purchased land adjacent to the golf course to build a $50 million resort-style hotel and conference center. The 200+ room ten-story hotel also includes several restuarants, a cooking school, a day spa, resort style pool with lazy river, and the golf shop is in the first floor lobby of the hotel.
Nathan’s renovation of the course created three new holes to create returning nines so golfers can now play 5, 9, or 18 holes and return to the clubhouse. In addition to widening playing corridors throughout the course, the renovation also included new greens, new bunkers using Better Billy Bunker, expanded Rain Bird irrigation, and the installation of the Longleaf Tee System with tees ranging from 4,000 to 7,005 yards! The course is as much or as little golf as anyone could want.
In 2019, The Refuge was awarded an “Environmental Excellence Award” for the positive impacts the renovation made on the course and surrounding property and it has been nominated for “Best New Public Course in America 2021” by Golf Digest given the vast scope of the renovation that effectively created a new golf course.
The Refuge is scheduled to re-open in the Spring of 2021.
